Burl is basically an malformation, on a tree, a natural anomaly. While still in the tree, it kinda looks like an outie belly button, for lack of a better way to describe it.
The burr, (belly button) is a section of the tree that has not grown properly, and is usually a cluster of small knots and or buds. Burl can also be derived from the roots of a tree.  It’s said to be caused by stresses, and disease or bugs.

I’ve only recently found out what it looks like on a tree, from a unique, Husband and Wife woodworking team. I’ll post their link at the end. They have a whole line of unique pieces, hand carved from Burl, they acquire themselves!

Burl can be found on many high end, obscure furniture pieces. It’s exquisiteness is like no other.

Photos shown here, are pieces I've refinished  Some may still be available, check availability under Current Works

Visit my "lumbersexual carvologist" friends Chris and Lisa at  Maderhausen Desgins, on Facebook.
Coursing the wild woodlands of Montana to bring you hand-carved decorative pieces, made from natural tree burls and anomalies.   BTW...the ship EVERYWHERE !
