This rare Victorian humpback steamer trunk is a true collector’s treasure, featuring one of the most scarce embossed tin patterns I’ve encountered in over 20 years of sourcing antique trunks. Crafted in the late 1800s, it retains largely original tin panels, oak slats, and brass hardware, showcasing the superior craftsmanship and structural integrity characteristic of high-grade Victorian trunks.
Known also as a Victorian steamer trunk, ornate antique chest, or treasure trunk, this arch-top vintage chest is a standout piece of home décor. Measuring 32 ¼” wide, 19 ½” deep, and 22 ¾” tall at the side center of the arch (25 ½” at the lid center), it’s larger than most trunks of the period and one of the more impressive sizes ever produced.
The trunk’s floral embossed tin panels have been buffed to a bright finish, revealing shades of browns, coppers, blacks, and bronzes. Oak slats have been refinished in deep walnut, while the remaining black tin is mostly original. Some gold/brass hardware, including corner brackets and rosettes, appears to be original as well. New custom brown studded leather handles have been added for functionality.
The interior is stripped and sanded, ready for your personal finishing touches, or it can be used as-is. It’s a blank canvas for decoupage, displaying family photos, love letters, sheet music, recipes, children’s artwork, or anything you wish. Custom interior refinishing—including staining, painting, upholstery, or decoupage—is available for an additional charge (adds ~10–15 days to shipping).
