Victorian Antique Steamer Trunk – Crocodile Embossed Tin Dome Top Storage Chest
This impressive late-1800s Victorian antique steamer trunk features an unusually large dome top (humpback) profile, distinctive crocodile-pattern embossed tin, and exceptionally uncommon ornate hardware. Measuring 35 inches wide and approximately 34 inches tall at the center of its arched lid, this substantial antique travel trunk has been professionally refinished by Angelina Nikon in rich iridescent deep brown and matte black, with walnut-stained wood slats, selectively buffed original hardware, and new custom aged-brown leather handles. The spacious interior has been completely stripped and sanded to clean natural wood, making this one-of-a-kind Victorian trunk a dramatic statement piece as well as a functional antique storage chest for blankets, linens, family heirlooms, record albums, keepsakes, and more.
A Statement-Making Victorian Storage Chest
Originally made as a travel trunk in the late 1800s, this substantial antique chest has the dramatic proportions associated with large Victorian dome-top trunks. The arched lid rises to approximately 34 inches at its highest point, creating a commanding silhouette that makes this trunk particularly well suited for an entryway, bedroom, dressing room, library, living room, or other space where it can be appreciated as a statement piece.
The crocodile-pattern embossed tin has been refinished in a rich, iridescent deep brown, while the smooth tin sections provide contrast in matte black. Walnut-stained wood slats warm the darker finish, and the distinctive original hardware has been finished in black and selectively buffed to reveal its elaborate detailing. New custom aged-brown leather handles complement the restored exterior.
Clean, Spacious Interior
The interior has been completely stripped and sanded to expose the natural wood and is ready to use as-is. Its generous size makes it excellent for storing blankets, quilts, linens, keepsakes, family photographs, record albums, seasonal items, or other household treasures. The interior may also be custom stained, painted, or torch-finished by Angelina Nikon for an additional charge.
Antique Condition & Restoration
This is an authentic 19th-century trunk, not a reproduction, and its age is visible in the dings, dents, repairs, and imperfections acquired during more than a century of use. A small section of smooth tin is missing near the lower front-left corner, and the ornate center hinge has a crack. Please review the detailed photographs closely.
The trunk retains its unusual hinges that hold the lid open without a separate stay arm. Heavy-duty swivel and locking steel wheels have been added for easier movement and stability; these wheels are not original to the trunk.
Measurements
35" wide × 20¾" deep (front to back)
27½" tall at the corners
29¾" tall at the center sides
Approximately 34" tall at the highest point of the dome
